If You Do This One Thing You Will Destroy Your Art

“Love. Fall in love and stay in love. Write only what you love, and love what you write. The key word is love. You have to get up in the morning and write something you love, something to live for.”

— Ray Bradbury

Validation is the enemy of all great creative work.

Are you creating for acceptance from your peers? Your mentors? Are you creating solely out the economic necessity? Are you writing a book to become a best-selling author? Are you moving people just so you can prove to yourself that you and your work is worthwhile?

I Am Not A Brand

I am a human being. Full of contradictions and complexities, most of which I’ll never understand. I’m full of heartbreak and endless amounts of love.

Brands are boxes. What we really need is honesty.

We need authenticity. We need people telling the truth.

We don’t need a filtered version of the frontlines. We’re resilient, we can handle it.

Hiding Behind Shields

We hold up shields anytime we need the approval of another thing to validate our true selves, or our artistic work.

Showing up and showing all is vulnerable. It’s much easier to sit back and let the judgement fall upon an institution, an MD, a PHD, some sort of certification.

An Ode To The Written Word

Writing is the truest form of magic.

it creates battles more real than the ones we fight internally every single day,

it gives us worlds more real than our own,

it turns us inward and makes it look outward,

The Real World As An Escape

What happens when the real world feels too real? What happens when we feel too deeply into the mundanity? What happens when we forget to escape? Better yet, what happens when we do?

Is intoxication freedom? Is an open perspective any easier than a closed one? Is a life spent seeking novelty any less valuable than one spent embedded in routine?

Finish Your Fucking Draft

At the time of writing this, I have too many unfinished drafts I’m slogging through. As well as a backlog of ideas I want to pour my time and energy into once those are finished. The river never really ends. And that’s okay.

We tell our muse, who is already temperamental enough, to kindly ‘eff off’, for a little while while we sit with our own self-doubt.

Everything That Needs To Be Said Has Already Been Said

All of the words in the world have already been uttered.

All the topics that are near and dear to your heart have been written about before.

But, none of this really matters.

What matters is your voice.

What matters is your story.

What matters is how you filter the world around you.

Stubbornness is Truth

When we choose our own destiny, we choose the path meant for us all along.

Instead of externalities shaping our vision we let our inner pull guide us towards the direction that is best. This usness is what the world needs, and is what we need to feel alive and full within our human experience.

Anything less is simply living the life of another. Shaped by a loop of karmic cause and effect. A purely reactionary lifestyle, never creating or doing anything of true value.

It’s Okay to Be Small

You have to know deep down you are going to reach your destination. The struggle is part of the process. It’s part of the journey. As you look back this might even be the most enjoyable part.

Relish in the times when you don’t have an audience to please. When you don’t have people expecting certain things from you. This is when you are truly free. The pressure is removed completely, you are free to push the boundaries of creation, art and yourself.
